Emotional Bonds

I just read an interesting article on leadership indicating that the most effective leaders connect with their people on an emotional level.  Because of this connection, their people want to be in their presence, follow their vision, and perform at their best.

This is such an important insight and really speaks to the quality of engagement.  The allegiance of people to a leader, to a cause or to a business, is really what we mean by engagement and it typically travels through three levels.

1) physical, I am here and going through the motions.
2) mental, I am intellectually engaged and contributing.
3) emotional, I am passionate about my work and committed to making an impact.

Studies indicate most employees are currently at best physically engaged. Businesses tend to feel pretty good about achieving mental engagement. Just think of the opportunity for the world if we were all engaged at the emotional level and brought our full capability to the table.
